What is OpenMontage?
OpenMontage is an open-source project that turns your AI coding assistant (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, etc.) into a full video production studio.
It's not just "prompt → one AI clip." OpenMontage automates the entire production workflow: research → proposal → script → scene plan → asset generation → editing → composition → quality review. It's the same structured process a real production team follows, but orchestrated by your AI agent.
As of August 2026, it has 51.9K stars, 6.5K forks, and 448 commits. License: AGPL-3.0.
Why "Production System" Not Just "AI Video Tool"?
Most AI video tools (Sora, Veo, Runway) generate a single clip from a prompt. OpenMontage is different: it automates the whole journey from idea to finished video.
Crucially, it can produce real footage videos, not just "animated stills." The agent searches free stock footage (Pexels, Archive.org, NASA, Wikimedia Commons), retrieves actual motion clips, edits them into a timeline, and renders a finished piece with narration, subtitles, and music.
Track Record (official)
| Project | What it is | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| THE LAST BANANA | 60-sec Pixar-style short (lonely banana befriends a kiwi) · 6 Kling v3 clips · Chirp3-HD narration · word-level captions | $1.33 |
| Reimagine Your Universe | 50-sec vertical transformation film · 5 generated scenes · sparse Google Chirp narration | ~$4 |
| OpenMontage Showcase | 7 generated worlds in one film · 3 image models + 4 video models | ~$5 |
| How Salt Made History | 100-sec cinematic documentary · real footage + narration + motion graphics | Zero API keys |
A 60-second Pixar-style animated short for $1.33. That's what OpenMontage can do.
12 Production Pipelines
OpenMontage ships 12 production pipelines (end-to-end workflows from idea to finished video).
| Pipeline | Output | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Animated Explainer | AI-generated explainer with research, narration, visuals, music | Education, tutorials |
| Animation | Motion graphics, kinetic typography | Social media, product demos |
| Avatar Spokesperson | Avatar-driven presenter videos | Corporate comms, training |
| Cinematic | Trailer, teaser, mood-driven edits | Brand films, promos |
| Clip Factory | Batch of ranked short-form clips from one long source | Repurposing long content |
| Documentary Montage | Thematic montage from free stock + open archives | Video essays, real-footage |
| Hybrid | Source footage + AI-generated support visuals | Enhancing existing footage |
| Localization & Dub | Subtitle, dub, translate existing video | Multi-language distribution |
| Podcast Repurpose | Podcast highlights to video | Podcast marketing |

How It Works: Agent-First Architecture
The defining feature: there is no code orchestrator. Your AI coding assistant IS the orchestrator.
1. Prompt: "Make an explainer about how black holes form"
2. Agent reads pipeline manifest (YAML) — stages, tools, review criteria, success gates
3. Agent reads stage director skill (Markdown) — HOW to execute each stage
4. Agent calls Python tools — scored provider selection ranks every tool across 7 dimensions
5. Agent self-reviews — schema validation, playbook compliance, quality checks
6. Agent checkpoints state (JSON) — resumable, with decision log and cost snapshot
7. Agent waits for your approval — you stay in control at every creative decision
8. Pre-compose validation gate — delivery promise, slideshow risk
9. Render (Remotion / FFmpeg)
10. Post-render self-review — ffprobe, frame extraction, audio analysis
11. Final video output — only if self-review passes
Three-Layer Knowledge Architecture
| Layer | Content | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Layer 1: tools/ + pipeline_defs/ | "What exists" — executable capabilities + orchestration | Tool discovery |
| Layer 2: skills/ | "How to use it" — OpenMontage conventions and quality bars | Usage learning |
| Layer 3: .agents/skills/ | "How it works" — external technology knowledge packs | Deep technical knowledge |
Setup Guide
Prerequisites
- Python 3.10+
- FFmpeg (
brew install ffmpeg/sudo apt install ffmpeg) - Node.js 18+
- An AI coding assistant (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Windsurf, Codex)
Install
git clone https://github.com/calesthio/OpenMontage.git
cd OpenMontage
# macOS / Linux
python3 -m venv .venv && source .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install -r requirements.txt
cd remotion-composer && npm install && cd ..
python -m pip install piper-tts
cp .env.example .env
Usage
Open the project in your AI coding assistant and just talk to it:
"Make a 60-second animated explainer about how neural networks learn"
"Make a 75-second documentary montage about city life in the rain. Use real footage only, no narration, elegiac tone, with music."
API Keys Are Optional (Zero Keys Works)
With zero API keys you can still make real videos:
- Narration: Piper TTS (free offline)
- Footage: Archive.org + NASA + Wikimedia Commons + Pexels + Unsplash + Pixabay (free)
- Composition: Remotion (React) / HyperFrames (HTML/GSAP) / FFmpeg
- Subtitles: auto-generated with word-level timing
Adding paid API keys (optional) unlocks FLUX, Kling, Veo, ElevenLabs, Suno, and more.
Caveats
- AGPL-3.0 license: commercial use requires source-code disclosure (especially if offered as SaaS)
- Requires an AI coding assistant: it's not a standalone GUI tool — you pair it with an agent (Claude Code, etc.)
- Quality depends on your assistant: the agent's capability directly affects video quality
- Cost governance when using paid providers: budget caps and approval thresholds exist but must be configured
- Local GPU generation needs VRAM: WAN 2.1 14B recommends 24GB VRAM
Summary
OpenMontage is an open-source system that turns your AI coding assistant into a film production studio. 51.9K stars, a 60-second animated short for $1.33, and zero-API-key usability. Unlike Sora/Veo-style clip generators, it automates the entire journey from idea to finished piece.
If you're interested in the next stage of AI video (coherent productions, not single clips), it's worth trying.
